Online Behavioural Guide
The Online Behavioural Guide is one of the main educational resources developed by DIGI-Story to help young people navigate the digital environment in a more critical, safe and responsible manner. The guide draws on the challenges identified during the project’s research phase and translates these needs into practical content, challenges and actions that can be directly applied to everyday digital life.
Rather than simply explaining how the internet and social media work, the guide aims to encourage a change in the way we use technology. It invites us to reflect on the time we spend online, the information we consume and share, the content we create, the personal data we provide, and the influence that algorithms can have on what we see and think.
Learn, reflect and take action
Each module combines learning objectives, key challenges, content, calls to action and additional resources. In this way, the guide does not merely impart knowledge: it sets out small challenges and exercises so that each person can analyse their own digital behaviour and put what they have learnt into practice.
Some of the suggested exercises include monitoring the time we spend in front of a screen, investigating the origin of a viral image, reviewing our app permissions, analysing why an algorithm recommends certain content to us, and tracking our own digital footprint. The ultimate aim is to move away from predominantly passive digital consumption towards more conscious, critical and responsible participation as digital prosumers.
What will you find in the guide?
The resource is organised into six thematic modules that address key aspects of media literacy and responsible digital behaviour:
Internet and Social Media Usage Habits
Digital habits, the attention economy, digital wellbeing and mindful use of social media.
Information and Disinformation
Identifying false or manipulated information, verifying sources, critical reading, artificial intelligence and deepfakes.
Responsible Content Consumption and Production
Responsible content creation, digital empathy, privacy, consent and copyright.
Data Protection and Online Safety
Protection of personal data, phishing, digital fraud, app permissions, passwords and two-step authentication.
Content Personalisation and Algorithms
How recommendation systems work, data collection, filter bubbles, algorithmic biases and feed control.
Digital Footprint and Privacy Management
Active and passive digital footprints, online reputation, privacy settings and environmental digital footprint.
