DIGI-Story: Empowering Young People to Become Critical and Creative Digital Storytellers

Digital environments have become an essential part of young people’s everyday lives. Social media, online platforms and digital content influence how they communicate, access information, learn and participate in society. However, being constantly connected does not necessarily mean having the skills needed to navigate the digital world critically, responsibly and creatively.

This article reviews key literature on transmedia storytelling and examines its relationship with social media, participatory culture and media literacy. Particular attention is paid to young people, whose everyday media practices increasingly combine consumption, production and circulation of digital content. The review suggests that transmedia approaches may offer valuable opportunities for education and media literacy, although effective implementation requires pedagogical planning, critical digital competences and attention to inequalities in participation.

This article examines the transition from consumer to prosumer through a review of research on participatory culture and transmedia literacy, complemented by empirical findings from DIGI-Story – Digital Storytellers: Empowering Youth Through Media Literacy and Transmedia. Data collected from 165 young people in the Czech Republic, Spain and Portugal reveal intensive social media use but a comparatively weak identification with the role of content creator. The findings suggest that media literacy education should move beyond technical familiarity and support young people in becoming critical, ethical and creative participants in digital culture.
